Using Panopto for video assessment and student presentations – step by step guide
How it works
Panopto can be a useful tool for assessing your students’ performance. Supporting both video and audio uploads, Panopto can be used for formative and summative assessment, allowing users to record videos live using the Panopto recorder, or upload previously recorded videos.
About Panopto Assignment folders
Assignment folders in Panopto are different from regular folders and subfolders because they allow students to record into them.
Also, students will only be able to view what they have uploaded to the assignment folder themselves. They won’t see submissions from their peers. Teachers, however, get to see everything.
Normal Panopto folders by default don’t allow uploads from students and also permit students to view all contents.
Creating an assignment folder
First thing you need to do is to set up an assignment folder within your module folder in Panopto.
Managing assignment folders
Opening the assignment folder
To make changes to an assignment folder, you will need to open it. You can find a link to the Assignments folder in the Folder Settings area within the Panopto folder. To open the Assignment folder click on its title in the Module folder Overview page (see below)
Alternatively, you can open it by clicking on the folder itself within your main module folder:
Once you have opened the assignment folder you will be able to make changes to it by going to ‘Folder Settings’ within it (see image below)
In Folder settings menu you can edit its name by clicking on Edit button next to the name of the folder (under Folder Information)
Sharing assignment folder
If you want to share a link straight to your Panopto assignment folder, you will need to open the folder in Panopto (make sure you open the assignment folder itself, not just the module folder) and copy the link from your browser (see image below)
This link can now be posted on your Moodle page or sent to students in an e-mail.
Instructions for Moodle
It is good practice to include some instructions for students on how to submit their video or audio assignments in Panopto.
Here is some guidance that we have written – feel free to use it on your Moodle page. Ensure you update the links to Panopto Assignment folder as appropriate.
Please use this link to upload your videos to Panopto [insert link to assignment folder here].

Student upload guide
We have produced a short how to video on how to upload videos to Panopto Assignment Folders.
- Keep assignment folder names clear, ensure they reflect what assignment it is for
- Communicate assignment expectations with your students well in advance
- Give students clear instructions
- Only close assignment folders once all students have had a chance to submit their work (once closed, Assignment folders in Panopto cannot be reopened)
Things to watch out for
An assignment folder can be closed by anybody with an instructor role for the module in Moodle.
Note: The assignment folder should not be closed until all required recordings have been completed for this assessment. Once an assignment folder is closed it cannot be re-opened.
Assignment folders, once closed, can no longer be seen by students (are hidden from their view in Panopto).
Closing the assignment folder will allow a new assignment folder to be created for future assessments within the run if needed.
Need multiple assignment folders within one module in Panopto?
By default, you cannot create multiple assignment folders within the same Panopto folder. You can create second assignment folder only after closing the first.
However, there is a workaround – you can create subfolders within the module folder, each containing an assignment folder. Just make sure your students know which folder they need to submit their work into.
